How DIY Inspired Kim Kardashian West To Start Her Own Shapewear Label

The shapewear-solutionwear brand SKIMS, by Kim Kardashian, was originally scheduled to be launched under the name of "Kimono" this summer. The debut was pushed back due to cultural appropriation claims and renamed by Kim as she explained, "I am always listening, learning and growing—I so appreciate the passion and varied perspectives that people bring to me."

The brand has thus been renamed SKIMS, which is (again) a play on her name. The inspiration to create her own shapewear came from 15 years of DIY-ing her shapewear to suit different styles of clothing, she managed to customize some parts and dye the fabric using tea-bags to match her skin tone.

"I would always cut up my shapewear to make my own styles, and there have also been so many times I couldn’t find a (shapewear) color that blended with my skin tone, so we needed a solution for all of this."

The collection will not only feature Kim's range of underwear, shapewear, and bras but also include pieces that could be worn out. “I’m so proud of the line. I’m so proud of the fabric. I made things that haven’t really been made before,” she adds, pointing out the one-leg bike short.

The collection's highlight is also that it is inclusive, with sizing from XXS to 4XL (with some additional pieces available in 5XL). The color options have 9 different nude tones, with more colors to be released as the brand expands, unlike the standard lingerie and shapewear options which come in three basic options. The commitment to inclusivity does not stop at the products but also the pricing, with merchandise priced from $18 to $98.

The reason why it's called solution-wear and not shapewear is because the brand wants to change the way women view their bodies and feel confident with their own. “Solutions are for everyone, shapewear is kind of an outdated term,” says Collier-Ungano, VP of marketing. For all we know, SKIMS could be a step to revolutionize body acceptance and may even encourage solving the problem of body inclusivity in mainstream fashion.
