The New Rockstars: Hip-Hop's Best Dressed

Fashion is major in the hip-hop community and the style pre-requisites for the rapper have changed over the years. Hip-hop has challenged and characterized the modern American style. The majority of trends originate from hip-hop and rap culture, be it dance moves or the next big fashion trend, due to rap culture slowly harmonizing with pop culture.

We count down 5 names in the current hip-hop scene killing it with their fashion game:

5. Skepta

Skepta lists as one of the most influential people and music artists globally and his fashion presence is not to be taken lightly, his style is laid-back and is frequently seen in tracksuits but also does not disappoint when it comes to tailored looks. Pulling off a head-to-toe white look is not a common phenomenon when it comes to hip hop but Skepta does it effortlessly. The man has also been awarded GQ Best Dressed in the years 2016 and 2017 and his appearance at black-tie events gives him an opportunity to express his personal style by including contemporary elements in his otherwise classic outfits.

4. Kanye West

Kanye West most definitely had a rocky start towards finding his signature style but when he did finally come around, he trailblazed the way for a fusion of rock 'n' roll and hip hop subcultures. He maintains his urban roots while giving us glamorous fur and velvets and adding a pinch of military themes into his dressing.

3. Tyler, The Creator

Apart from being an award-winning musician, Tyler The Creator's style has purely skater influences. Loud prints, oversized shirts, chinos, and hats are pretty much his go-to looks. Skater style culture is very notable in Los Angeles and has played a major role in his career. In fact, since his style is very rooted in skate elements, his non-sponsored endorsement gave rise to Supreme -which is also a skater brand.

2. Kendrick Lamar

Less is always more when it comes to Kendrick Lamar's personal style. He dresses in toned-down color palettes and always pieces the outfit together with a pair of white trainers. Standing out by not trying to stand out, his style isn't your average run-off-the-mill gaudy opulence. Rather, he prefers accessible and relatable streetwear in muted greys, whites, and blacks while also sparking up his looks with some graphic prints.

1. A$AP Rocky

From adding his own personal spin to classic suits to cleverly multi-layering pop colored outerwear. A$AP Rocky clearly has mastered the art of making style statements. Infusing high-end fashion with streetwear like the Breton stripes and a neckerchief incorporated into a very relaxed athleisure outfit is an absolute winning look for the rap star.

Without the rise of rap music and musicians, streetwear wouldn't be as relevant to high fashion as it is in the present day. With rap icons now fronting campaigns for the best fashion houses, these men are initiating a shift in the traditional view of fashion - by following their own taste and unfollowing the rules.
